This is a story of a retired college professor and his family.
Again this year the professor and his wife come to a cottage by the side of a lake. The husband, who is nearly 80, suffers from a weak heart and is badly absent-minded these days. Every day his fear of death increases, while his wife gives him warm and gentle support.
All of a sudden on his birthday, their daughter, who is a divorcee, visits them with her new boyfriend and his son. Though she has not been on good terms with her father, she requests her parents to take care of the little boy and sets out for her second honeymoon with her boyfriend. The son left behind indulges in fishing in the lake with the old man.
The daughter comes back to the cottage after getting married to her sweetheart, and tells her mother that she can't understand her father at all. The mother criticizes her, saying "Why can't you see how loving and warmhearted he is?" The daughter goes up to her father and says, "I want to be close to you just like other girls are to their fathers. I really want to get along well with you, Dad!.".
